Typhoon killed five, Thousands displaced in Rizal

Typhoon "Milenyo" left five people dead, destroyed 1,359 houses, and displaced 5,021 families or 25,297 persons in Rizal province.

Damage to crops and properties was estimated at R11 million in 11 towns and 31 barangays, Rizal Gov. Casimiro "Ito" Ynares said.

Rizal spokesman P. A. Esguerra said that five died in Taytay in typhoon-related incidents.

Power and telephone services in some parts of Rizal have not yet been restored while some roads remained impassable due to floods, Esguerra said.

"This is the reason why up to now the governor’s office can hardly get the exact figure of the fatalities of people and the extent of damage to crops and properties," Esguerra said.

He said displaced families were evacuated to schools and health centers for safety.

At Village East Executive Homes, Cainta, the rip-rap at Telstar St. was destroyed when a creek overflowed, flooding the entire village. Mango and other fruit-bearing trees were felled by strong winds.

Imelda Avenue from Country Homes to Pasig Park were flooded, said Cainta Mayor Ramon Ilagan last Thursday night.

Ilagan said "Milenyo" is the strongest typhoon to hit Rizal and Metro Manila and other parts of the country in recent years.

"Cases are now declining especially in Morong. Only four confirmed (dengue patients) are confined at the hospital," he told the Philippines News Agency in a telephone interview.

Over the weekend, the province saw heavy clustering of cases, prompting local health officials to declare an outbreak.

Dozens of residents trooped to the provinces' health clinics and hospitals for suspecting having contracted the disease.

Episode 46 Outbreak

LATEST! State of Calamity declared in Morong, Teresa & San Mateo

Philippine Department of Health confirmed Thursday an outbreak of dengue in Maybancal, Morong . It was reported that three deaths were recorded in two weeks in the area.

DoH also urged local government units and residents to refrain from conducting fogging operations to fight dengue fever, saying the method is not only costly but is also a health hazard.

This warning was issued as Doctor Eric Tayag, officer-in charge of DOH's National Epidemiology Center, confirmed an outbreak of dengue in Barangay Maybangkal in Morong, Rizal that has claimed three lives in less than two weeks.
