...As end-of-the-world signs go, this is not on the scale of famine, pestilence, or rivers turning into blood, but still, today’s taga-isla (islanders) can’t help but wonder whose sins it is they are being punished for. A village with no landlines, cable TV, cars or factories spewing fumes into the air is drowning in the fallout of economic growth it never knew.

RIP, Leonida "Luning" Damaso

San Francisco, California

On October 26, 2009, Leonida "Luning" Damaso died peacefully at the ripe age of 95 at her home in San Francisco. She was born on July 4, 1914 in Morong, Rizal, Philippines. She was married to Julian Damaso. Luning migrated to the United States in 1980 and became a US citizen at the age of 83.


Luning is survived by three children: Jaime (married to Carmelita), George (married to Juliana), and Anita (married to Glicerio). She is further survived by eight grandchildren: Lennie, Joel, Jun, Gerald, Derwin, Joy, Glenn, and Michele, and 12 great-grandchildren .

Mga kababayan:

San Guillermo Association in Southern California is a non-profit organization strongly committed in helping the less fortunate. We are asking for your voluntary pledges/donations to help our kababayans that were severely affected by tropical typhoon, Ondoy.

I received several calls from Mrs. Lita Buenaventura, who is supposedly vacationing in P.I., but instead, together with the Barangay Captain, she is actively assessing the damages caused by Ondoy and devoting her time in helping our kababayans. She related to me that our folks badly needed basic necessities. The flood almost reach the national road of San Guillermo. People residing in Tabing-Ilog and in Tambongco have lost everything that they have worked for in decades and most of all... four members of a family died because of Ondoy. While we are on our cellular phones, both of us became emotional and we burst into tears because we're both devastated by what had happened to our kababayans. Can we do something to help them? Can we give them hope and inspiration and encourage them that there is light at the very end of the tunnel? Shall we?

The need is so great...the stake is so high...images of human sufferings caused by Ondoy are extremely difficult to watch... so please join us and help us disseminate this effort.

Appeal for Help from San Guillermo Community -Northern California

Kababayan,

The recent news of massive floods caused by Tropical Storm Ketsana (known as Ondoy) in the Metro Manila and surrounding areas are devastating: full of chaos, fear and tragedy. Millions are affected - homes ruined, precious belongings damaged, lives lost, and the traumatic impact to human survival for those who managed to survive.

Our hometown of San Guilmo has been affected -families displaced out of their homes, crops massively affected for consumption and farmer incomes, houses ruined, and families making sense of this unpredictable and uncontrollable force of nature.

For many of us here in the US, we have our bare necessities: shelter, food and clothing. Many in our hometown of San Guilmo have lost those precious and necessary life commodities.

This is a critical time to turn inward and seek out YOUR generous and helping spirit. Let us look at our own environments and our wallets and consider a kind gesture to those afflicted by the terrible storms. Let us help our fellow kababayan in San Guilmo: THEY NEED HELP!

Storm Watch: Rizal in Distress

50 Families evacuated in Morong

In Rizal province, local rescue workers scampered to respond to distress calls in various towns with reports of simultaneous landslides, rising flood waters and electrical dangers.

In Antipolo City, a certain Aubreline reportedly died after she fell into an overflowing creek yesterday morning, Supt. Dioscoro Maata, chief of police said.

Reports from the monitoring center of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) based at the Ynares Center Compound showed that several towns in the province were flooded prompting affected residents to immediately leave their homes and transfer to designated evacuation centers in their respective barangays.

Strong winds and heavy rains continued without interruption starting at around 8 a.m.

Personnel of the PDCC said thousands fled their homes in Tanay town, including residents whose houses were situated in riverside and mountainside areas.

Landslides in Sampaloc in Tanay, and Phase 3 of Barangay San Luis in Antipolo City were also reported to the PDCC around 11:30 a.m.

Floodwaters reaching up to waist deep at the town proper in Tanay made some of the streets almost not passable to small types of vehicles.

In San Mateo, some 40 families whose houses are located along the riverbank on North and South Libis of Barangay Banaba volunteered to leave their homes as their houses were submerged in raging floodwater.

More than 150 families have also been evacuated in Jala-Jala town; 50 families in Morong; and some 300 families in other parts of San Mateo and more than 50 families were relocated in Kalayan, in Angono and hundreds of families in Cardona town as of 8:30 a.m. yesterday.

Hundreds were stranded along the flood-prone portions of Ortigas Avenue in Cainta and Taytay towns as jeepneys could not pass through the flooded highway.

Some tricycle drivers in the city proper of Antipolo also reportedly refused to convey commuters to their destinations as most streets were submerged in rising floodwaters during the height of the heavy rains from morning until late afternoon.

PDCC personnel said the number of affected families were expected to increase by hundreds if the rains and strong winds did not stop.

Philippine Flag: The missing ray of Morong

Letter sent to Philippine Daily Inquirer by retired Col. Francisco T San Miguel:

September 24, 2009

Dear Editor,

This has reference to the article of Michael Lim Ubac which was published in the
September 24 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

I would like to point out that the article omitted Morong (now Rizal) in the list of the provinces
represented by the eight rays of the sun in the Philippine flag.

Dr. Luis Camara Dery wrote in 1999 that the following statement appeared in a document
which was written in Tagalog by Aguinaldo himself:

"At tapusa'y ay ang walong rayos na nataglay ng araw na sumisikat ay ang walong provincias Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga, Morong, Laguna, Batangas, Nueva Ecija at Cavite na dineklara ng Gobierno Kastila en estado de guerra." (sic)

On the main subject, the present proposal to add a 9th ray to the sun in the Philippine flag has drawn many protests in the internet. This proposal was discussed publicly and thoroughtly many times before. It reached the Senate in 1987, proposed by Senator Aquilino Pimentel, It was not approved.

Panel approved 9th ray to Philippine flag, Morong omitted

There were elation from Muslim communities and its representatives when bicameral panel approved the inclusion of the 9th ray to Philippine flag. The author of the bill, Senator Richard Gordon released a statement saying that the proposed law would foster greater unity among Filipinos regardless of religion. Its worth noting that Sen Gordon is running for president and is badly trailing in national surveys.

Reports released by the panel and reported by the media omitted Morong as one of the provinces that revolted against the Spanish government.

Perhaps the committee and Richard Gordon should check the history of the the flag before sponsoring the bill.

National Artist group honors Francisco Feliciano, three others.

Morong native, Francisco F. Feliciano was honored recently by The Filipino Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers.

Feliciano was born in Morong, Rizal, in 1941. He is a composer and conductor, highly regarded for his liturgical works, for he has long been associated with the Asian Institute for Liturgy Music. His music is avant-garde and modern, and he has written choral works, music for orchestra and ballet, and chamber music.

Two of his compositions – Salimbayan for Wood Quartet and the choral “Pokpok Alimpako” – have won awards in international competitions in Germany and Italy.

“Later he became avant-garde and insular but his choral ‘Pamugon’ can stand for all time,” opined Robledo.

These three are in their senior years and have impressive bodies of works. All are National Artist material, but perhaps they have no clout with the powers-that-be?

Naaalala ko pa yung time na nagkita kami dyan sa amerika and he welcome me. Nakasama ko pa silang mag-asawa during may stay there in the U.S pero at this time pareho na silang nawala na nakakabigla talaga.

Last na uwi ni Kuya Lito , we meet pa sa estasyon at nagkwentuhan pa kami last February 2009 yata yun at sya pa nga nagdala ng imbitasyon ng aming kasal para sa mga ninong at ninang namin dyan sa U.S.

Elsa Millare Mambrebe of Sitio Tanawan, SG passed away after long illness on Sunday, September 6, 2009 surrounded by her family.

Elsa is survived by her loving children Arlene, Ed, Gen, Puroy, Ferdie and grandchildren all of San Guillermo. She is the sister of Carlito (Carlet), Norberto (Nobing) of Dulo and Rodolfo "Ompo" Millare of South Carolina, Elvie (BiBe) and Alfredo Tambongco of California.

Tag-ulan na naman and my daily morning walk is becoming exciting every day. With slight ambon the walk from town to Bombongan gives one a nice sweat and a shower too! I remember the old kabataan days when we would take shower when it is raining, storms or not. The every day walk gives me the creeps sometime when I pass by some old houses – bintanas shut, and appears like no life activities inside. In one street alone I counted 11 houses. Talked with some neighbors and told me, “Nasa states na po, at ang iba nasa Middle east, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, UK, Canada, and other countries. Palau? Yes! They were recruited by the one-time-famous-medicine-drink (still famous?) – NONI.

Where there are sorry-abandoned or empty houses there are also mansions. You read it right – mansions, as in, big house, wide driveway, full (lago) glass windows, and security iron grills aircon boxes. (Wonder why they don’t install central ac? One guy said, “magastos po”.) A mansion with no central air? About to be finished is a new one short meters from the junction of National road and F San Miguel Blvd (Butig station). Few meters away from her place is the long-been-building Church of???. Now a roof pointing to heaven is forming. Across that as y’all already know is the PRISM a two-building school. Way down half of the Blvd there is another drive way being built crossing the palayan. Bet ya a house will soon follow. And further down left side is the new chapel of Kambaste religious sect. That long road to Bombongan is still the fave of the joggers, walkers, and ehem – daters.

I observed that some of beautiful cement/white-painted-bench of years ago are gone or are broken. A kumpare's memorial bench for their daughter still remains in the original place just across the Kambaste chapel. Personally speaking it is easy to give money to build a bench but there is no budget for maintenance from the munisipyo according to someone I spoke to. Kaya pag babalikMorong ng may mga benches – check at pinturahan ulit.

The two welcome baluwartes are a good sight no question, but, looks like few maintenance is now necessary, especially at the bases where (maybe) carabaos scratched their sides or cleaned their sungay. The yellowish color around the bases are youknowhat even with a sign near them – “Bawal ang _ _ _ _. Aso Ba Kayo?” Well, maybe they are the two-legged dogs.

Balitang Tulay sa Morong (Cont.)

The town is beautiful on rainy days. No flood. Clean air and clean streets. Rain contributes to traffic jam, but who cares people are carefree and happy. Ahhh, My Morong someone said is truly OUR Morong. “Taga dito po ba kayo?” asked one trike operator. I said, “Aba, hindi ka tiga Morong kasi may punto ka.” Remember we never use “d” when we talk. Otherwise masisiste ka – “Napasma yata dila natin ah.” It does not matter to me, magalang naman ang tawo at nangingino-po. After paying him P10 (huo hindi na P7 ang bayar sa trike) I said, “Salamat at tinutulungan ninyo ang mga tiga Morong na talaga”. Nakakikiwa lamang na tatanungin ka ng iang rayuhan na di tiga Morong. Para bagang nawala na ang iyong kabataan, paniningalang pugar, pagba baskitbol, panganganto, atbpa noong araw. Man, this is MY town! I am part of it no matter what!

Naala-ala ko 2loy ang kwento ni pareng Obet M. na nasa ERA raw sila at tuma ng SanMig ay may isang “ruhat” yata na nakikihanruke sa kanilang huntahan ay hindi maganda rating na sinabi tungkol sa Morong ay binira niya ng, “Man, this is MY town. I was born here and you can _ _ _k yourself and get out of town.” Ewan ko lamang kung totoo word4word but lumitaw ang pag-ibig sa ating bayan. Bira bata…!

The old site of the bsura – talks, issues, negative emails and tsis – is now one good-looking-scenery, elevated beautiful no-smell site with some young trees growing – mataba siempre because of the roots feeding on old basuras from many places. Yes, including Metro Manila. The much-talk-about recycle plant sa may pagliko ay maganda. There is a paved road leading to the place, a nice path for walkers/joggers . . . daters ulit!

The Rizal Provncl capitol is very beautiful. But why is it in Antipolo and not in Morong where the Provncl Hospital is? No need to make issues now – it’s done and the “Y” empire couldn’t move (not the building) to Morong because one of the “Ys” live there. Hmmm?

Early election is in the air, heard from a very confident leader ng isang partido, a jogging partner. JB is running. Wala raw makalaban. Seems like JB is unbeatable. After all, he is like the American insurance commercial – “You are in good hands with Allstate”, or ….with “Ys”.

Sige po, saka na ang ibang magagandang balita sa atin. Mirang tahimik at walang balikbayan. Mura ang ingin! Tatatlo po kami sa tulay at nanunuor ng baha (tskolate water) sa ilog at pirisong naliligo raon. Naka bday suit pa nga ang isa. OK lamang po, basta’t hwag lamang gamiting R&R ang mini-glorieta na pinagkagastahan ng ibang mga tawo at hindi para sa mga piriso.

Syanga pala ang tunsoy na plstic-wrapped sa Morong SM ay P265 mga lima! Sa palingki sa paglabas ay mga P125 ang lima at mahahalo mo pagpili ng mga butityog at sariwa pa.

Hwag lamang kalimutan ang ating Morong.

Nabanggit ang ilog – ay linis po at gawa ng baha. Naala-ala ko tuloy noong mga bata kami na haplit ng talon sa tulay (iyong lumang tulay natin, ayyy nabisto ang aking idar) at malnaw ang tubig at maganda ang buhangin. Mas lalong maganda ang mga naglalaba sa paraan na “kinakastor” hehehehe.

Isang kasaysayan na di malilimutan ng buong bayan ang katatapos lamang na Mayor's Cup o palarong pambayan 2009 dito sa ating sinisintang bayan ng Morong. Ilang araw din ang lumipas dahil sa maulan at pabago bagong panahon hindi agad natapos ang palaro pero ika-8 ng Hunyo ganap na ika- 6:20 ng gabi ay natapos din naman.

Tinanghal ang mga manlalarong taga SAN GUILMO bilang champion at hindi lang basta basta champion kundi UNDEFEATED CHAMPION ibig sabihin walang nakatalo, na isang malaking karangalan dahil sa aking pagtatanong ay ang huling UNDEFEATED CHAMPION ay noong 1970's pa.

Kaya sa ating mga manlalaro, sa pagsuporta ng ating mga kabarangay, ng sangguniang kabataan, ng sangguniang barangay , ng barkadahan , isang pagpupugay at pagsaludo sa inyong lahat dahil ang tagumpay na ito ay nangangahulugan lamang ng isang nagkakaisang barangay.

Hindi makakalimutan ng mga taga-SAN GUILMO ang mga araw na yaon na habang lumalaro nga mga players nandyan ang buhos ng suporta ng mga kabarangay natin na kahit ulanan na ay nagpapabasa para lang makapanuod at masuportahan kahit sa palakpak ng kamay tuwing makakashoot ang mga players. Biruin mo naman sobrang nakakatuwa kase isang araw ng manuod ako nakita ko yung mga matatatandang taga-San Guilmo, nagtitiis ng init at ulan makapanuod at maksuporta lamang, sobra akong natouch dahil sa kabila ng kanilang kahirapan sa paglalakad magpapahatid sa plaza makapanuod lang.

Kaya sa ating mga players sa pamamagitan ng email na ito nais ko na malaman ng buong taga-San Guilmo dito sa Pilipinas at maging saang panig ng mundo ang kasaysayang ginawa ninyo na mananatiling isang magandang halimbawa sa susunod pang mga henerasyon.

Happy Birthday: Rizal Province

The province of Rizal marks its 108th anniversary today, which Malacañang declared a special nonworking holiday. The day Rizal Province was founded usually falls a day before Independence Day. It was made a holiday by virtue of Proclamation 1790, or the Foundation Day of Rizal, signed by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.

In a statement, Rizal Gov. Casimiro Ynares III said the province’s “remarkable achievements” in providing services and infrastructure projects to residents would make the celebration much more meaningful.

Activities planned for today by the provincial government are a parade with street dancing, a live concert, a medical mission, a jobs fair and basketball exhibition games, officials said in a statement.

The focal point of the celebrations, however, is Teresa town, which officials picked as the host of this year’s festivities.

On June 11, 1901, the second Philippine Commission headed by William Howard Taft enacted Act 137 officially giving birth to a province named in honor of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal. The new province consisted of 33 towns with the merging of 19 towns from what was then Manila province and 14 towns from the Morong Politico-Militar district.

Over the years, the territory of Rizal diminished and is now composed of 14 towns after 12 of its most progressive towns were annexed to the area later named Metro Manila by virtue of Presidential Decree 824 issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos on November 7, 1975.

Mga kababayan sa California, $45 billion deficit and tinatahak ng ating state at ipinapasa ng mga mambabatas sa atin ang problema sa pera...

Proposition 1A NO

This measure would make major changes to the way in which the state sets aside money in one of its “rainy day” reserve accounts and how this money is spent. The measure would tend to increase the amount of money set aside in the state’s rainy day account by increasing how much money is put into this account and restricting the withdrawal of these funds.
If this measure is approved, several tax increases passed as part of the February 2009 budget package would be extended by one to two years. State tax revenues would increase by about $16 billion from 2010-11 through 2012-13.

Proposition 1B NO

Requires supplemental payments to local school districts and community colleges to address recent budget crisis. Fiscal Impact: Potential state savings of up to several billion dollars in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Potential state costs of billions of dollars annually thereafter.

Proposition 1C NO

Allows the state lottery to be modernized to improve its performance with increased payouts, improved marketing, and effective management. Requires the state to maintain ownership of the lottery and authorizes additional accountability measures.

Proposition 1D NO

Temporarily provides greater flexibility in funding to preserve health and human services for young children while helping balance the state budget in a difficult economy.

Proposition 1E NO

Helps balance state budget by amending the Mental Health Services Act (Proposition 63 of 2004) to transfer funds, for two years, to pay for mental health services provided through the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program for children and young adults.

Proposition 1F Yes

Encourages balanced state budgets by preventing elected Members of the Legislature and statewide constitutional officers, including the Governor, from receiving pay raises in years when the state is running a deficit. Directs the Director of Finance to determine whether a given year is a deficit year.

University of Rizal System (URS) was established by integrating the Rizal State College, Rizal Polytechnic College and Rizal Technological University Antipolo Annex. At the present, the University operates in eight campuses in the Province of Rizal with URS Tanay as its main campus and with eternal campuses in Morong, Pillia, Rodriguez, Angono, Binangonan, Antipolo City and Cainta. It offers complete education from kindergarden to graduate school. As of School of Year 2003-2004, the University implements a number of a academic programs in the doctoral (5) Masteral (6), baccalaureate (28), non-degree, and laboratory schools (high school and elementary) with a total enrolment of 18,973 in the first semester.
