Red Cross eyes more donations
Manila Standard 9/11/06

THE Red Cross has intensified its blood donation campaign to help save the rising number of people going down to dengue in the provinces, an official said yesterday.

“The Red Cross is now one of only two organizations in the country allowed to maintain a blood bank,” senator and Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon said.

The dengue outbreaks have prompted authorities to announce a state of calamity in several Rizal towns.

In Morong, three children were said to have died while 10 more were being treated at the Rizal Memorial Hospital.

The town has reported 384 cases of dengue in the year to August, with 24 of them dying of the mosquito-borne disease.
