Four persons died and 86 cases of dengue fever/dengue hemmorhagic fever were
reported in the town of Morong as of Sept. 9.

In response to the dengue outbreak, the Morong Volunteers' Emergency
Response Team (MVERT) participated in the bloodletting project that was
jointly initiated by the DOH RIZAL, Philippine National Red Cross and Mayor
Jojo Buenaventura at the Rizal Provincial Hospital last Sept. 10 at about 6
a.m.
MVERT members donated blood to the Red Cross under the condition that these
blood donations must be solely for the use of dengue patients from Morong,
especially those who are poor and cannot afford rising medical bills.

Indeed, MVERT cannot provide financial assistance to dengue victims because
of our logistical limitations.
We are volunteer fire fighters without a firetruck, medical first responders
without an ambulance and rescuers without a rescue van. Our existing
medical, fire-fighting and rescue equipment come from our own ranks and
donations from concerned individuals.

But we can help the victims by donating our own blood to those who must
undergo blood transfusions. In doing so, a life can still be saved.

The bloodletting was covered by ABS-CBN.

After the bloodletting, MVERT with the participation of Mayor Jojo launched
an anti-dengue information drive throughout all the barangays of Morong.
Reading materials on DHF and tips on preventing it were dessiminated to the
public while a mobile public address team explained the effective measures
that homes and community can carry out if only to prevent the spread of the
outbreak. These measures include:

1. Four O'clock Habit. The mosquito transmitting dengue comes out at 6 a.m.
and 6 p.m. Before the mosquito attacks, people clean all possible breeding
places at 4a.m. and 4p.m. as a means of disrupting, if not killing, the
dengue-carrying mosquito.

2. Dengue Watch. A person or a group is assigned in barangays and schools
to monitor all possible breeding places of mosquitoes and ensure that these
places are always kept clean. Cleaning our surroundings is the best defense
against dengue -- especially during the present La Nina season when rains
too often create breeding grounds for the dengue carrier.

MVERT supports all efforts of the government, NGOs and the Morong Community
in forging and implementing an effective response plan to the dengue
outbreak in Morong.

We salute the initiatives of the Morong Community abroad in raising
financial assistance to our kababayans who are afflicted by DHF. Though
miles of oceans and land sepate us, your concern for our beloved Morong
inspires the people of our town who are at the frontlines of our battle
against dengue.

Mabuhay po kayong lahat.

Thank you for loving your kababayans (and Morong) so much. GOD BLESS you and Dr. Lucilene Tolentino and the other concerned friends/kababayans ALWAYS..... ABUNDANTLY!!!

We started praying the Novena to San Roque last Saturday (after the 6 a.m. Mass, and will go on until the 17th). As a community, we invoke his intercession and protection against pestilence and plague. Ginawa rin namin ito nuong panahon ng SARS.

Warm regards,

Yoly

Updates from Dr. Lucilene Tolentino: She writes tonight, "marami na nga ring from Teresa ang maysakit. At nasa Morong hospital na nga rin ang iba. Tinanong ako ng kuya kung para sa taga-Morong lamang ba ang pera, sabi ko'y hindi. Basta maysakit, tulungan." Here are the names of the doctors that Dr. Peter Tolentino will be working with:
Dr. Iluminado Victorio - Provincial, Dr. Estrellita San Jose-Victorio - Pediatrician, Dr. Fatima Soriano-Aban - OB-GYN, Dr. Bong Zafra, Dr. Pogi Mariano, Dr. Rudy Cruz, Dr. Tony Mateo, Lorelie Ramos-Vidan - DSWP Dept of Social Worker- Rizal. She will know who the indigent patients are.
Dr. Peter Tolentino and some of his doctor friends will remain as volunteer private citizens who are helping out. They suggested that the money will go directly to the billing department of each hospital where the Dengue afflicted patients are, the nurses in turn will tell the relatives that some help are given by our kababayans from USA. Some help means one blood transfusion cost of P1000, however, they could increase the amount if they deem necessary based on an individual situation. We will leave the financial distribution to the judgement of our caring doctors. Principal Rosemary Pascual will do the accounting of the money for us. We had sent $1400 (from the Francisco family & spouses & kids & from the collection of Morong Bayan St. Jerome - $600) last night through one Morongueno.
Thank you for caring and for your monetary donations.

Lucilene F. Tolentino, MD FASCP

The Morong organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area are also making donations to be sent through our kababayans who are leaving on Tuesday. I spoke with Mon and Lety today who are in Morong. There are many needs - medicines, supplies and clean up of street canals. People were given advisories on precautions, symptoms, sanitation. There's spraying going on, water is being tested and problem areas (mga sapa) have been detected. It's not just in Morong, other towns are affected. Let's wait for Mayor Jojo's communique, magpapadala raw yata ng letter. I'm sure he has an overwhelming task, let us keep on praying, meantime wait for Dr. Lucilene's updates. God bless our town, its neighbors and the people around it.

Notes: It's a good idea to call your relatives and friends from time to time to check how they are. If you wish to add your relatives and friends to this communication, please let us know. I'm keeping all the earlier emails so they can receive them if they wish. If you have questions about anything, feel free to send an email to Dr. Lucilene, she may not have all the answers but she'll do her best. tolentino3555@charter.net
